Mackmyra Äppelblom is an elegant single malt distilled at the Mackmyra Bruk distillery. The whisky is finished in saturated oak casks which previously held Calvados from Christian Drouin.
The light tones of apple from the Mackmyra spirit, together with richer apple flavours from the Calvados, fuse with generous oak character to create a spicy balance. Notes of apple, ripe pear, citrus, almond toffee and cedarwood are present.
Nose: Fruity, lightly floral with vanilla notes from bourbon and new American oak casks. Toffee, toasted oak and cedar. Fruity tones of apple, pear and lemon.
Taste: Fruity with a taste of berries. A well-balanced oak- and fruitiness marries with cherries, sweet raisins and vanilla fudge. The texture is medium thick.
Summary: Fruity, spicy tones together with a light oakiness and a soft, fruity apple tang.
The Seasonal Collection Story
In the Seasonal Whisky collection, we create editions with innovative and seasonal expressions, and since the winter of 2013, we have launched two limited editions per year. Some examples of popular finish storage throughout the year include barrels that have previously carried mulled wine, Amarone, cloudberry wine, rum, cherry wine and birch wine. The series also includes close collaborations with beverage producers such as Masi, Plantation Rum and Christian Drouin.
I was very surprised when i first tasted Appleblom at the Soho Whisky Club event and Skortedid too. I was extremely impressed and purchased a bottle of each the day after. I have since bought another Appleblom to serve as a dessert whisky at dinner parties.
This is a really pleasant dram. Very easy to drink. Has a sweetness to it that is quite nice. You really do get the fruitiness out of it like you would expect. I personally got a flavour of peardrops rather than apple but a few of the other people that i know have tried it say they get the apple flavours.... so its clearly just me. Either way its very interesting and very pleasant.
Lovely spring/summer tipple, beware it won’t last long!
